The first time the town of Bihać is mentioned is in 1260 in a document of Bela IV but it is assumed that the town emerged much earlier. In the year 1262 it becomes a free royal city. This title was granted by Maria, the wife of Bela IV. Until the arrival of the Ottomans Bihać was part of the Hungarian-Croatian union. Bihać was conquered by Hasan-paša Predojević in 1502 who was an Ottoman Begler-beg. In the year 1878 as part of the Austro- Hungarian invasion of Bosnia Bihać becomes a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the official Ottoman rule ends in 1908 after the annexation of Bosnia.
